By the time this letter is posted, we would have known as to who would have won the Permatang Pauh by-election.
Being a supporter of the change that Malaysians of today want, what must be attended to first is that Pakatan Rakyat should steadfastly do away with race-based politics. Those elected are Malaysian leaders who should deal with everyone’s problems and grouses.
The races have united for this change and this change must be managed well without any suspicion. The people of Malaysia have shown that race will not and cannot divide us anymore.
They have shown maturity in a participatory democracy and expect elected representatives to lead with a conscience and humility. They expect the leaders to teach them ways to catch the fish and not just provide the fish. Our Malay brethren have awakened; they have had enough of all the scare tactics employed to make them believe that they cannot be achievers. They have had enough of all the big projects which have left many in pathetic conditions of despair and disrepair with no benefit to the common folk at all.
They have had enough of taking what is specially meant for them in the name of affirmative action. They are now prepared to take up the challenge to work hard for themselves and for the nation so that a better social order where the needy are looked after is put in place. Enough of projects. We should start concentrating on the people with a good and sound education system being put into place. We do not need people from overseas for we have good people here and we have many Malaysians who are waiting to come home to contribute to developing a thinking Malaysian mindset.
Our unity and diversity are always our strength and it should never be taken for granted and should always be guarded with all our effort.
Basic guidelines which can then become law should be put into place to ensure that religious conversions are done fairly and justly so that no family is left desperate after such a conversion is made. To do this, the judiciary’s independence has to reinstated with the honour. The new coalition will have to very wary of the old ways which can creep in via some members who can become parasites from within. The new leaders must ensure that only the trusted are given important jobs which will bring benefit to the common people who have made this change possible.
The new leadership should lead by example by making it a practice - which later can have the force of law - where a premier only helms the nation for a period of two terms and nothing more no matter how famous they may be. This will lead to a good system of check and balance which will trickle down to other areas of governance which will see that welcomes are not overstayed. There is a lot of work to do, so let’s get moving and make Malaysia a nation that we can be proud of again. We are being reborn after 51 years. This is Merdeka for all of us Malaysians who were not there in 1957. May God be our guide. |
