Police presence at Parliament rapped
Tarani Palani | Jul 16, 08 5:14pm

Parliament snippets Opposition MPs question the need for a heavy police presence at Parliament on Monday saying police have adopted a ‘guilty until proved innocent’ stance.

Double standards for opposition claim

Ipoh Timur MP Lim Kit Siang questioned the need for heavy police presence in Parliament on Monday.

"If the ministry of home affairs is basing their course of action on blogs and SMSes then why isn't the same level of action taken against Rosmah (Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak’s wife)?

‘Blogs have written much on her involvement (in the Altantuya murder).’

He lamented that the opposition were subjected to double standards under which they are guilty until proven innocent where else some parties are innocent until proven guilty.

‘Don’t forget Sabah, S’wak corridors’

Permatang Pauh MP Wan Azizah said that in the additional RM20 billion requested under Supplementary Supply Bill, RM108.5 million was allocated for the developments of corridor projects in the peninsular including the Iskandar Malaysia (Irda), the Northern Corridor Economic Region (NCIA) and the East Corridor Development Region (ECERDC)

She expressed disappointment that the Sabah and Sarawak corridor projects were not a part of the funding plan and hoped that development plans of those corridors were not merely empty election promises by the government.

Immigration irregularities

Seputeh MP Teresa Kok said that the recent arrest of several immigration officials for allegedly receiving bribes for the issuance of work permits could just be the tip of the iceberg.

She said she will raise the case of Heyitang Health Management Sdn Bhd which only applied for permits for four workers from China but had a total of 22 accounted to them.

"Something is obviously wrong when immigration procedures can be so easily circumvented," she said.

‘Lazy answers’ slammed

Bukit Bendera MP Liew Chin Tong slammed what he described as the government's 'lazy answers' to his written question.

Liew had enquire the total amount of monthly and annual rent that each ministry or government body had paid to Putrajaya Holdings since 1999.

He said he instead received a table which summed up the average monthly and annual rent for the requested period (1999-2007).

"For such a question, especially asked in a written form, the government is expected to provide detailed information in a transparent and accountable manner" he said.

CLP exam missed due to roadblocks

Ipoh Timur MP Lim Kit Siang revealed a letter he received from a law student - identified as just Ganesh - who said missed his Certificate of Legal Practice (CLP) examination due to the heavy traffic jams in KL caused by police roadblocks on Monday.

Ganesh said many CLP students were caught in a predicament as they will not be able to re-sit the exam next year. This is due to the fact that CLP will be scrapped from next year onwards.
